The Scottish Daily Mail’s chief football writer has reported on Twitter that a Rangers loan move for Ross McCormack is a possibility on transfer deadline day.
What’s the story?
Rangers have already made ten signings this summer so far but it seems their business is not quite yet complete as we head into the final hours of the transfer window.
Daily Mail journalist Stephen McGowan reckons that Rangers are in the running to make a sensational deadline day move for Aston Villa’s Ross McCormack.
It’s a move that would absolutely excite Rangers supporters, even if McCormack’s previous spell at the club wasn’t exactly a roaring success. McCormack came through the Light Blues’ youth teams but went on to make just 14 first-team appearances before moving to Motherwell.
Since then though, he’s had a successful spell in England, regularly banging in the goals in the Championship.
Still the player he once was?
At 31 years of age, there’s an argument that McCormack’s career may have peaked, especially after a £12m move to Aston Villa last summer didn’t see him get the goals or reach the good form expected of him.
However, his goalscoring record at Fulham, Cardiff City and Leeds United is undeniable and he could really add something to Pedro Caixinha’s attack at Ibrox. He scored 130 goals across his spells at the three clubs.
With the ability to play as an out and out striker, behind the striker or even on the left wing, he also offers a priceless versatility that could be huge for the club.
Whether the reported loan deal comes off remains to be seen, but with journalists willing to put their name to the possibility, it’s certainly in the works at some level just hours away from the deadline.
